Our Wilmington Car Accident Lawyers Reveal Which Spots of Town to Avoid
Wilmington is a beautiful city with many attractions that make it a wonderful place to live. With our aquariums, museums, shopping centers, and beautiful coastlines, our city is constantly attracting tourists. When you consider the number of visitors coupled with the more than 100,000 people already living in the city, it’s easy to see how our roads can become overwhelmed.
City officials have been trying to remedy the issue of crowded roadways and intersections by expanding some of our roads. However, the development and construction have only added to the issue, making roads even more congested and dangerous.
Accidents are happening every day on our busy city streets, but which areas should you watch out for? Our Wilmington car accident lawyers at Speaks Law Firm have compiled a list of the city’s most dangerous roads and intersections to encourage residents to drive safely through these accident-prone areas of town.
College Road
There is a 4.3-mile stretch of College Road between Gordon Road and Wilshire Boulevard that is one of the most dangerous areas for drivers in Wilmington. Between 2014 and 2016 alone, there were 462 collisions on this part of College Road.
The Intersection of South College Road and Randall Parkway
This intersection is on College Road and is particularly dangerous. Many University of North Carolina at Wilmington students drive and/or ride their bicycles through this intersection adding to the confusion and congestion.
Carolina Beach Road
This road in front of Walmart sees a number of pedestrians who try to cross without being hit by a speeding car. Between 2011 and 2016, five pedestrians were killed on this road and an additional five were injured.
Because of the dangerous nature of this road, the North Carolina Department of Transportation is planning a $2 million project that will add sidewalks, signalized crosswalks, and barriers in order to make the road safer for pedestrians, Star News Online reported.
Market Street
Market Street deserves a place on our list of the most dangerous roads. This street has about four and a half miles between Third Street and College Road that saw 269 collisions during a two-year time period. Averaging about 11 accidents a month, we recommend being extremely cautious when traveling on Market Street.
Market and New Centre Drive
If you’re crossing this intersection on Market Street, stay alert! Due to its proximity to big retailers like Walmart and Target, it is a hot spot for accidents.
U.S. 17
This stretch of highway from Washington Acres Road to Sloop Point Loop is a frequented spot for travelers and emergency responders. Between 2014-2016, there were 149 collisions. This is not surprising considering how many people use this road to travel through Hampstead.
Highways 11 and 87
This intersection is currently controlled by stop signs. Due to the lack of safety precautions, there have been a number of fatalities here. Residents and commuters asked the Columbus County Board of Commissioners to install traffic lights but were told the intersection did not see enough traffic to warrant the installation of stop lights.
